Going Bananas (Savannah, that is)

Oh, hi! How are you? How have you been the last 1,346 days? (Or 3 years, 8 months, and 8 days if that’s easier.) I hope this finds you well! It’s been a minute since I posted and I couldn’t think of a better comeback post than talking about the best (and most fun) base, er, BANANA BALL team on the planet.

I was fortunate enough to snag tickets to a coveted Savannah Bananas game when they went on sale in January. Tickets sell out immediately and I was excited to finally see what all the brouhaha was about. When March arrived, three of my friends and I caught them in Montgomery, Alabama, for their 2023 Banana Ball World Tour. It was my first time seeing the Bananas and they exceeded all expectations…from the party they throw while you’re waiting in line to get in (that was at least a mile long) to the very last pitch (and all the tricks, dancing, and band music you could ask for in between). The show/game lasted 2 hours (Banana ball rules) and I was sad when it was over. I took hundreds of pictures and clips of all the shenanigans, registered for giveaways, and laughed so much I cried.

Fast forward to April when I received notification that I was the grand prize winner of the 2023 Golden Ticket Sweepstakes from the Bananas and their amazing sponsor, Zappos. Working in IT, I immediately thought it was a scam. I emailed them back to “accept” the prize and see what was next. It was not, in fact, a scam. It was A MAJOR AWARD! Executive Rock Star Tara Whiddon (her real title!!) responded that I had won the big prize in their contest which was airfare, hotel, and VIB (Very Important Banana) tickets to see them during their stop in Las Vegas in May. I immediately passed out. 🤣🤣

Tara lived up to her Rock Star title in getting me and my bestie set up with our plane tickets, hotel reservations, and everything we would need for the trip. I am not the easiest travel companion, especially on planes, so Tara went above and beyond in accommodating us to make sure we (I) were extremely comfortable and I am forever grateful to her (and the Bananas and Zappos) for that. We got in pretty late at night and Tara the Rock Star was waiting there to pick us up and take us to our hotel (Rock star status for me: Unlocked. Felt like it anyway). Once we got to our room, rock star status went into overload. There were gold lamé balloons on the wall spelling out “Welcome Sherri and Liz”, banana balloon creations, and lots of Savannah Bananas and Zappos swag for us. I don’t know the last time I felt so special.

Liz (bestie) and I spent the next 2 days running around, exploring Vegas. It was her first time so we tried to cram as much into our long weekend as possible. In my humble opinion we managed quite a bit. The Bananas were staying in the same hotel so we constantly ran into them in the halls and elevators and during breakfast in the lobby. I fangirled every time I saw one and probably embarrassed poor Liz to pieces.

It was finally the day of the game and Tara again showed off her Rock Star skills by picking us up in the tour version of the Bananamobile and whisked us away to the mountains of Nevada to the Las Vegas Ballpark. We were greeted by another pair of SB rock stars who knew exactly who we were and where to take us (to hang with the other VIBs). VIBs get early access to the games and get to meet all the players, coaches, and more before the game (and get to take all the pictures with them they want). They also get to choose their seats before regular GA ticket holders are permitted in. I had mentioned to Tara in a phone conversation early on that I LOVED watching the umpire at the Montgomery game – he is the BEST dancer. Unbeknownst to us, she had passed along the message and as we descended onto the field I heard someone yell “SHERRI” at the top of their lungs. I turned to see Vincent, the Dancing Umpire, running toward us. He grabbed me in a huge hug and I thought my face was going to permanently freeze into the biggest smile I’d ever had. I am STILL smiling. After the greatest hug ever, we took tons of pictures with the players and got them to autograph our SB poster. Vincent actually signed my VIB laminate and I fangirled all over again. The game was so much fun with 20 new tricks we hadn’t seen before. I don’t know how they keep coming up with fresh material, but they DO👏🏻IT👏🏻EVERY👏🏻NIGHT. We also met Jesse Cole – the owner, always wearing a bright yellow tux with hat at the games, the Banana Band, the Man-anas (their Dad Bod Cheerleading Squad), the official SB magician, the SB mascot Split, and more.

The game, players, coaches, crew, and everyone on the SB team were all amazing and we couldn’t have asked for a better time. It did start raining and lightning at one point so Liz and I headed out in order not to die (though we would have died happy). I’ve posted some photos of our epic adventure and have to thank the Savannah Bananas, Zappos, and the entire SB (and the Party Animals!) team for making this the trip of a lifetime. And of course, Vincent..the sexiest dancing umpire alive.

Currently in progress

We’re in day 5 of #bloglikecrazy…watch out now! Today’s prompt is to bring my loyal readers up to date on what I’m “currently” doing in my life.  Since the Birmingham Girls Club conference is over, I am finally getting back into a routine.

Watching: I’ve fallen in love with Scandal, Nashville, and keep sticking by my old Tivo favorites of Big Bang Theory, and How I Met Your Mother. For some unknown reason I cannot seem to quit SNL though I have tried many times. I don’t know what it is. Also, my deep dark secret: On sick days, I curl up with the iPad and marathons of Dawson’s Creek and Felicity. HUSH!

Listening to: I’m a huge folkie at heart, so have been pulling out my Ellis Paul, Don Conoscenti, and Christopher Williams a lot lately. I also enjoy newer “alternative” stuff, so love Lorde, ZZ Ward, and CHVRCHES. When I want to dance, I grab some Avicii, Daft Punk, or anything on Power 102.1. I recently discovered that station when my SiriusXM subscription ran out and I can’t turn it off. It brings back every high school memory I ever had.

Planning: I’m not! I have been planning event after event for the last solid year. I quit. I’m done. I’m kidding. I have next week’s BGC Social coming up and we are hand painting and donating ornaments to First Light Women & Children’s Shelter for it. I’m also working on our holiday party that will be in December where I’m concocting a different twist on Dirty Santa. I will need to work on some more events for BGC for 2014, as well as start the Birmingham Dance Walks back up so that will be next. I’m also going to Savannah soon, but we’re not planning a lick of that trip. We’ll figure it out when we get there and do whatever we do! LIFE IS GRAND!

Thinking about: My life and what I want to do with it. I have all these resources..what do I want to do with them? How do I want to utilize the gifts and desires I have? An article I read today really made me stop and think. You can find it here. Let me know what you think.

Looking forward to: Everything. I don’t want to discount anything because something seems bigger or better. Everything is something to look forward to whether it’s for the celebration or the learning experience. I am very happy to have a mini vacation when we head to Savannah, but I am looking forward to waking up everyday and figuring out a little more about myself. And, more importantly, figuring out how I can help people more.

Reading: I don’t have a lot of time for reading, but do make time for my two small groups that I meet with weekly. We are currently reading “Unglued” and “Made to Crave” – both by Lysa TerKeurst. I need both books desperately. I need God more.

Making me happy: My small groups and girlfriends in there, my wonderful support system of friends and family that I can vent to, celebrate with, or cry on any day of the week. “Me” time is making me happy right now. That may sound (and seem) selfish, but I am an extrovert that requires copious amounts of introvert “me” time. It’s how I recharge and regroup. Thankfully, I’ve had lots of that lately so have been especially grateful (and productive)! I’ve been relaxing and recharging, but also doing some much-needed de-cluttering and cleaning out in the house. Yay!

What are you currently into?

Until tomorrow dear friends!

I’m baaaaaa-aaaaaaaack

I know you were just waiting around for this moment, right? You’ve been up at night, not eating, not even able to work, wondering when I would make my return to blogging, right? I missed you too!

While I am not happy about missing a few days of #bloglikecrazy, I am very happy that I was away on a mini vacation with my wonderful boyfriend and some of my friends from Northern Virginia. My former boss (and one of my best friends and mentors) goes to Texas once a year with her family to visit a mutual friend of ours and catch a UT football game (former boss’ hubby is a huge Texas fan). They’ve done this the past few years and while I’ve always wanted to join them, something has always come up that prevented me from going. Not this year! Earlier in the year I made a firm decision that I was going (God willing). I was able to keep that promise to myself and met up with the boss lady and her family in Austin for a few days. I was able to see them for the second time this year and they were able to finally meet my beau. It was a glorious time full of Elmo, football, marching band, authentic food, boots, art, friends, and love. Elmo was a surprise that Daniel snuck into his luggage before we left. Imagine my surprise when I went to get in bed the first night at the hotel and found a bright red puppet in there! We decided to take him everywhere we went and tweet pictures of him along the way. You can find the pics on Twitter by searching for #elmovisitsaustin. He had a big time!

I’ve missed quite a few blogging days, but will be glad to extend my month for those days. I have enjoyed reading all the other ladies blog like crazy this month. I’ve learned more about my friends and what they’re passionate about in these past few weeks than I ever knew before. And I am happy (though not surprised) to find out we have so much in common – on and offline.

Today’s writing prompt was to set 4 simple goals for yourself for the rest of the year. Boyfriend and I have already started on this for ourselves and as a couple for the new year. But the #bloglikecrazy goals were geared more toward the remainder of this year, which I love. So, here are mine:

  1. Work out AT LEAST 3 times per week (preferably more) and drop 1 pants size
  2. Read The New Psycho-Cybernetics
  3. Write 2 more articles for Magic City Post
  4. Volunteer at least twice before the year ends (preferably more)

Those are my goals for the rest of the year. Do you have goals for the rest of the year? What are they? Post them in the Comments section and let’s share our successes at the end of the year!

Love yourself.
