I FINALLY Finished #BlogLikeCrazy!

Blog Like Crazy logo

Blog Like Crazy is the monthlong challenge to post new content to your blog every day in November. Javacia of See Jane Write introduced us to it years ago.

Every year I say I’m going to do it. Every year I start out strong. Every year I peter out and never finish. UNTIL THIS YEAR! I DID IT!!!! Now, I didn’t do it gracefully and I probably didn’t do it correctly. But I did it. I posted 30 new posts for November. Some days I had to post it the next day so you got a twofer or a threefer (today!) because I missed my deadline or missed a day without knowing it, but I DID IT! WAHOOOO!!! I found the trick; don’t tell anyone you’re doing it. lol. This is the first year I didn’t declare I was doing it – I just did it for myself to see if I could actually do it. And I did. Sort of. lol.

Today I was going back through the posts, making sure I had all 30 (sans yesterday and today’s which I was working on) and realized I missed November 6 somehow. So I just wrote one for November 6th and posted it. Better late than never and we’re still in November so it’s still part of Blog Like Crazy! 🙂 I hope it still counts as part of Blog Like Crazy and I’m still considered a completer.

I hope to do it again next year and put more planning into it to have much better content. I am thankful for my wonderful friends and the wonderful readers who joined me for the ride this month. It was a blast and I hope you stick around to see what else lands here the rest of this year and next!

I’ll be sharing out Javacia’s post on everyone who completed the challenge later because they are always rock stars and have the best blogs! I love reading and sharing the fellow Janes’ content. Happy November and congrats to all who finished this challenge and NaNoWriMo!

Where I’m From

Thank you to Javacia for the writing prompt in her blog post today. Here is my poem:

Where I’m From

I am first from my mother
I am from blank space and lost time
I’m from the projects and welfare
I’m from from stealing and spankings

I’m from abandonment and alcohol
I’m from anger and ashes
I’m from hell and heaven
I’m from heartbreak and goodbye

I am from my father second
I am from discipline and ambition
I am from perfection and love
I am from understanding and gifts

I am from the world third
I am from abuse and invasion
I am from sex and lies
I am from tragedy and recovery

I am from myself last
I am from unicorns and rainbows
I am from smiles and laughter with champagne and cheers
I am from happiness and hope with gratitude and grace.
I am from myself most.

I Feel Pretty, Oh So Pretty (thanks to PinkLuxPL)

Christina

I first met Christina (aka PinkLuxPL) a few months ago through Javacia Bowser at a See Jane Write* event. She immediately caught my eye with her stylish outfit and picture perfect makeup. I was mesmerized and I wanted to be her. Just look at the picture above; I rest my case.

I knew I wanted to learn more about her and, more importantly, from her. How did she put that fabulous outfit together? How did she achieve makeup perfection? I didn’t have to wait long. After talking to her over email and then in person a few times, I scheduled her to do a makeup workshop for Birmingham Girls Club. As a preview, I went to her house before the workshop to learn more about her technique and let her do a test-run on my face since I was going to be the model at the workshop. The run through was amazing and I knew instantly that I needed to be a participant in the workshop (and not the model) so I could watch from the audience and write these tips down.

I’ve since been to a few of Christina’s events and I learn new tricks and money-saving tips each time. My top three takeaways from her are the instant facelift (I have had TONS of compliments on my skin since integrating this into my makeup application), how to apply concealer and highlighter for best results and to contour, and lots of money saving tips on where to get good makeup for a lot cheaper than Sephora – including top notch brushes – and ways to save money at home during my beauty routine. Being 40, I thought I knew most everything I needed to know about makeup. I’ve been wearing it since I was a teenager and have mastered a lot of of the tips, but I had no idea how much more there was and how much better I feel about my appearance just from a few new tricks from Christina. The saying is true…you can teach an old dog new tricks. 😉

Christina offers group classes and makeup sessions, as well as one-on-one wardrobe/styling and or makeup sessions. Visit her web site at pinkluxpl.blogspot.com to get all the details. I highly recommend her. You will look (and feel) 10 years younger. And no, this isn’t a paid or sponsored post – the girl just made a believer out of me.

Birmingham’s Got Your Back

It’s no secret that I am in love with Birmingham. I dub myself “Birmingham’s Unofficial Cheerleader” (at least until they create the position for me). What thrills me to no end is that I’m not alone. Birmingham is a city full of love for one another. We have helped launch hundreds, if not thousands, of books, movies, businesses, incubators, and more just from supporting each other in our endeavors.

Take Carrie Rollwagen and Amy Bickers. Active members of the Birmingham community, they decided to launch Kickstarter campaigns to try and publish books that they wrote. Success! Completely crowd-funded books by local authors because Birmingham believes in its own. Another great example is Sidewalk Film Festival, a local independent festival that recently had its biggest year due in part to thousands of Birmingham believers shouting from the rooftops how amazing it is over the years.

On a personal note, I’ve found so much support in groups like See Jane Write and Birmingham Girls Club, created to help other like-minded women find and build their own tribe. For example, I’m sitting in a coffee shop right now with a room full of other women, blogging and writing. My blogging buddy, Jennifer, and I put the word out earlier this week that we were going to be setting some time aside to just work on our blogs this weekend and invited others to come along and here we are. This is the power of our community, supporting one another even with no words and just the clicking of keyboards.

I believe in Birmingham. She believes in you. Birmingham’s got your back!

#bloglikecrazy, you say?

Today kicks off one of my favorite times of year. November is #bloglikecrazy month over at See Jane Write and it’s always fun to get to know my writing sisters even better during this time. We strive to blog every day during the month of November.

I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve this year so I am really hoping to do it! With a month-long challenge for Birmingham Girls Club over on Instagram going on, as well as my own personal meditation challenge – a la Deepak Chopra – this will prove to be very interesting. But I think I can do it!

I’ll also be moving more this month, too, care of Jennifer over at Stellar Fashion & Fitness, SOL Dance Experience, and – hopefully – some swimming. We have the Mustache Dache coming up in a few weeks and I’d really like to participate this year if I can.

So, welcome to November and off we go! At least we got an hour back last night. 😉

P.S. Also, in a completely unrelated, yet hilariously funny side note, I accidentally had a few typos before proofing just now: “sleep” instead of sleeve above, as well as “medication” instead of meditation. I wonder if my body is trying to tell me something about sleep and medication. 😉
