Dragon Dancin’

This past Saturday we held the 3rd Birmingham Dance Walk in the streets of downtown. The impending rain moved the start time up an hour to 1 p.m., but we still had a wonderful turnout.

I always get nervous before these events, even when they don’t require a lot of preparation like this one. I had music from the previous dance walk that we didn’t use so decided to stress less and go with the flow. I had the music, I had the jambox, and all I needed (wanted) were the people. We had a special surprise guest coming and I wanted a good turnout for her.

I arrived a few minutes early so decided to stop by Urban Standard for water before people arrived. I never made it inside because Mary Jean was headed my way about the same time. After her came Erika, Rachel, Javacia, Amy, and Edward. More and more people started walking up as we milled around…waiting for the music man to appear with the speakers. Soon came Pierce, the music man, with Elaine, Andrea, Bobby, Matt, Olive, Katie, Paula, Bailey, Tanya, Heather, Drew, Jasmine, the other Drew, Jennifer, Shira, Ginger, Nathan, Emily, Clark, Larry, Lauren, and lots of others. We soon had a call from our special guest that she would meet us up the street so off we went. Birmingham’s 3rd Dance Walk was underway!

We rounded the corner at 23rd Street South and danced in place for a while, waiting for our special guest. Soon after we stopped to “break it down”, she appeared.

Madge, the Magic City Dragon, was coming over the hill toward us. The squeals from the dance walkers were audible for blocks. Many had never seen Madge before nor knew that we had a new dragon in town. Madge is the brain child of Carrie Hill and was created with the help of local artists and friends. She is a 31 foot long dragon that takes about 11 people to handle and maneuver. There were walkers on the outside directing and guiding her and a boatload of people inside her pushing and pulling her along.

Madge joined us for the entire dance walk which lasted about 4 city blocks down, around the block and back up 4 blocks – all the while stopping traffic and garnering honks from passing cars and trucks. There were close to 60 dance walkers – we picked up some along the way – and quite a few talented photographers capturing the Dance Walk and Madge. The dance walk lasted about 20 minutes total and we danced to Queen, Unk, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Michael Jackson, Metro Station, Pink, Snap, Justin Timberlake, Vanilla Ice (I had to), Will Smith, and finished off with the full length “Praise You” by Fat Boy Slim. After all, we HAD come a long, long way together. I think some people underestimate the workout you get from dance walking – I came out panting and sweating.

This was the most successful Dance Walk to date and it was in large part due to our guest of honor, Madge, and word of mouth from our wonderful friends and fans. So many people helped make it possible or better including Daniel, Emily, Pierce, Elaine, Jeanne, and our talented photographers Larry, Clark, Tanya, Rachel, Sarah, Emily, and Madge herself along with video from Jennifer. Those behind Madge were Carrie, Daniel, Justin, Wade, Billie, Bruce, Mandy, Kelly, Wesley, Drew, Kelsey and a few others. What an amazing crew and a wonderful addition to our Dance Walk. I hope she’ll consider joining us again – she was a huge hit! madge

Extra special thanks to Javacia for letting us make it a See Jane Move event, and to Edward for this awesome article on al.com and to Emily at Magic City Post for always being our biggest fan and writing a wonderful recap which you can read here.

Best Week Ever

This week has been positively amazing. The energy, creativity, and ambition of the people I’ve been around has left me completely in awe of them and – my favorite word to wear out – INSPIRED.  I realize that I use that word a lot, for a multitude of things, but it’s the perfect word to describe those events, people, organizations, music, that get me so pumped up..about Birmingham (Emily from Magic City Post – who was also a panelist at last night’s SJW event), writing (Javacia from See Jane Write),  fitness (Daniel and Tanya), volunteering (Scott), fashion (Jennifer) and a million other kindred spirits in this city. Let’s recap the week for those of you playing at home:

  • Started volunteering with a theatre that I adore – Theatre Downtown
  • The WOD (workout of the day) from hell at Iron Tribe Fitness. My legs were shredded for 3 days, but I did those 150 squats!
  • Goal Setting Workshop at ITF – can be applied to ANY goal(s) and it was life-changing. I can’t wait to share the notes with you in separate blog post.
  • Lost 1/2 pound. I’ll take it!
  • My first Paint the Town Red meeting (PTTR) – it’s a digital arts festival benefiting the Jefferson Shelby Chapter of the American Red Cross. The art and events in the works for this year’s event are going to blow you away!
  • See Jane Write event – “Blogging and the Future of Community Journalism” One word – AMAZING!
  • Interview of PTTR folks for a Magic City Post article I’m working on
  • Tonight we are going to a loft warming party
  • Tomorrow (Saturday) is my fiance’s birthday! I will let him have “game time” with our new XBox while I rearrange my bedroom to create a very private, very “me” writing nook. It will be full of inspiration, perspiration, and hopefully good words. I’ll be sure to post pics when done. I am uber excited about this change of scenery and the timing works out well because he loves to game. 🙂
  • Tomorrow evening we are going to have dinner with friends to celebrate his birthday and then off for drinks and shuffleboard. (Do you know where we’re going?)
  • Sunday I am going to the Southern Bridal Show with a fellow bride-to-be (Jennifer mentioned above) and then off to a music jam at Das Haus.

This week and weekend couldn’t get any better. I will be sure to fill you in on all the details of the weekend. Be sure to wish @socialmediabham a very “Happy Birthday” tomorrow if you know him. Tip: If you don’t know him already, meet him. He’s amazing. Also, don’t forget the next Birmingham Dance Walk is coming up on Feb 2nd – you can get details and RSVP here. Can’t wait to dance down 2nd Avenue with all you lovely people! And lastly, be sure to tell your friends and family you love them. Today is an especially amazing day…don’t let it go by without telling them you care!

How You Like Me Now?

Ayeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! How was your Thanksgiving? Mine was FANTABULOUS! We had a delicious lunch with my dad’s side of the family in Clanton (our norm) and spent time teasing my uncle, playing with tots and teens, and giving my dad and brother heck for anything and everything. I love Thanksgiving. lol! Then we had friends come up for the weekend from Mobile and grilled out another fabulous feast last night. We were all asleep by 9 p.m. It wasn’t the tryptophan…there was no turkey at any of the tables. It was ALL mashed potatoes. My mashed potatoes. With goat cheese. You’re welcome. 😉

Now the boys are playing Call of Duty and Black Ops on the Xbox (friend brought his up…I’ve never really seen or played with one before) and his wife and I are geeking out on laptops and tablets. It’s been a wonderful Thanksgiving already and the weekend has just started. We love these friends and consider them family. I met them through Daniel and they’ve been along for the ride ever since he and I met. We couldn’t ask for better (or more sarcastic – yay!) friends and we adore them. It’s wonderful to spend the holidays with friends and family you hold dear to your heart. I hope you all got to do the same.

Today’s #bloglikecrazy writing prompt makes me soooooo happy! It’s ‘Music Mantra.’ I can tell you right now what my Music Mantra is and has been for a few years now…”How You Like Me Now?” by The Heavy. I first latched on to this song when I was interested in moving back to Alabama (from Northern VA/DC) and landed my current job. It was the first one I interviewed for, it was an amazing opportunity with a great company, and when I found out I got it I was beside myself. As a matter of fact, I was in the car driving home from work when they called to tell me and as soon as I got into my apartment complex I pulled over, got out of the car, and did a happy dance in the parking lot. Then I finished the drive to my apartment, went inside, and squealed and yelled for a good 10 minutes. Then I called everyone I know. I heard the song the next day on the way to work and THAT.WAS.IT. It was mine. I still consider it my song and if I’m ever having an off day or not feeling great about myself or my achievements, I fire it up and I’m instantly transported to that day and time and how amazing I felt about. I also cranked it up to 10 in the car on the way out of Virginia the day I moved back to Alabama. Here you go…crank it up!

(Author’s note: I will admit that I haven’t listened too closely to all the lyrics or looked them up. I enjoy the chorus and that’s what I use for my mantra – just in case the lyrics are less than stellar. lol.)

What a week!

It’s been quite a whirlwind adventure since I decided on reinvention. I reached out to some friends and got some wonderful advice on the path to adding more to my life. I’m slowly, but surely, working on those items and have gained more experience already doing more things I love. I also signed up for some webinars and classes that may help me along my journey. The first one has already inspired me enough to spread the lessons I took from it to a few close friends who are also looking for “something more” in their adventures. Don’t get me wrong – we’re all happy on our journeys, but each of us knows there is something more for us to be doing, helping, saying. My first “lesson” was a conference call led by Jennifer Bailey of Grace Street Group. I happened upon her through an article she wrote for Tiny Buddha, my newest favorite obsession. The call was amazing and I am now on my way to living a more intentional life. I highly recommend attending one of the calls to take your own thoughts from what she has to say. I can’t wait to delve deeper in to her site, offerings and words.

Jennifer gave me permission to share my notes and what I took from the call with you all since a few have asked. She poses some very good questions that we should ask ourselves often, if not daily. We should all be working toward living an intentionally-designed life, whatever that design is for you. These are very rough notes, mostly bullet points that I made myself to emphasize what I need to ask myself. If you have more questions about them or would like more information, you may contact Jennifer at gracestreetgroup.com/contact.

An Intentional Living means LIVING ON PURPOSE
Not on auto pilot

Most of us are too consumed with the business of life – bills, errands, carpool, etc. = auto pilot

Deathbed Regrets

  1. “Wish I had lived a life truer to me and not what was expected of me.” (Are you living your life? Not based on what others expect of you or from 5 or 10 years ago….based on NOW?)
  2. “I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.” (What would change if you were living your best life?)
  3. “I wish I had the courage to express my feelings.”
  4. “I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.” (When you think about what matters most to you, what needs to change in the coming months with those relationships?)
  5. “I wish I had let myself be happier.”

Don’t get to the end of your life and just have lived the length of it – live the WIDTH as well.

What regrets do you have? Those are the answers for taking action.

Become an active participant and designer of your own life. Are you watching the action from the sidelines? Is life happening TO you, UPON you?

 Some obstacles people mention:

  •  “I’m unhappy” or “Something is missing…I know what I don’t want, not what I do want.” (FIGURE IT OUT – Stop thinking about what you don’t want and think about what you do want.)
  • “I don’t have the time or money.” (Focus on what IS possible rather than what isn’t.)
  • “I’m too old or it’s too late.” (It’s NEVER TOO LATE to pursue your best life…around what matters most to you.)

Tolerations are things you’re putting up with that cause friction, take up space in your mind, and drain energy. They create a wall between you and your intentional self. Most people tolerate between 500-1000 things everyday. Minimize the tolerations.

Single greatest change I can make immediately: STOP WAITING FOR SOMEDAY!

Decide to be extraordinary – do what you need to do NOW.

  • Set goals
  • Manage goals

Those are the notes I took from her call and they immediately made me question all of my decisions and the path I was on – not in a bad way, but in a very positive way. I look forward to hearing your take on those notes and how you might use them to help you.

Getting back to the beginning….I am not sure how I happened upon Tiny Buddha, but I can’t get enough. Now I subscribe to their daily email and anxiously await the day’s thoughts and inspirations. I’ve quoted and retweeted them quite a bit since discovering the site and, in turn, others have been turned on to the hopeful words. I love our “little” internet community. 🙂

On the fitness front, things are going well. I had to reschedule a few workouts, but DID reschedule them – did not skip them. Granted – my G57 Fitness & Training guru – won’t let me, but that’s a good thing. 😉 I did need to take a scheduled day off this week to just recharge and recoup. I had a bit of a rough day and needed to go home and veg out. I’m not proud of skipping my workout, but I also knew it was what I needed to do for me that day. Back on schedule today and I’m going to kick some booty. During Monday’s workout, I set a new PR for a specific work out circuit we do even with some added exercises. I nearly burst into tears from disbelief and happiness. I’m excited to continue the success.

Last week was a great week for Birmingham. The weather is warming up and people are venturing outside more each day. A nice kick-off was the Earth Day celebration held a few weeks ago at our beautiful Railroad Park – it had something for everybody. Crestwood Festival and the Magic City Art Connection soon followed and the weather couldn’t have been better for either. Sprinkled in with those fun events was amazing local theatre, comedy and music. I saw Iron & Wine at the Alabama Theatre on April 26th and he blew me away. Last week a new local grocer opened their first brick-and-mortar store not far from where I live. Freshfully has been an online resource for locally grown fruits, vegetables and the like for over a year. I was very happy to volunteer to help out during the opening of the store in Avondale and that had a great turnout. I went 3 times! I can’t get enough of their meats, vegetables, snacks and cheeses. Last week, I also had a lovely GNO with some good friends that turned into a pretty late night of chatting, exploring, and supporting each other. And to top the week off, I finally had the opportunity to once again patronize a favorite music series – Moonlight on the Mountain. It’s a beautifully intimate venue in Hoover presenting primarily folk, Americana, roots, country and bluegrass artists. I saw an artist that I’ve been following for years – Pierce Pettis – after hearing him at a house concert in the late 1990’s. He is now touring with his daughter, Grace, whose voice is just as remarkable. It was such a treat to see him again after many years of missing his show. I plan to make MOTM a permanent stop on my concert listening sprees. I am going again this weekend to see one of my favorites – Dan Navarro. I’ve seen Dan in many places around the country, but never at home so this will be a very special show.

This weekend proves to be fast, fun and full of activity. Tonight is my workout and then possibly stopping by our new musical festival, Secret Stages. Tomorrow, I will be attending IronTribe’s Tribal Wars, the first annual Birmingham International Street Fair, Love Your Mama Fest and music jam in Forest Park, our first local Food Truck Throwdown, attending the Dan Navarro show and going to a doggy birthday porch party. Sunday will be visiting with a friend who recently had surgery and toodling around.

On a more serious note, I’ve had a very intense week. I’ve been very introspective, conflicted and struggling with a few things. I am still battling them, but hope to find peace and clarity within myself and for those involved soon. It’s been a lot more painful than I thought it would be. I’m still struggling……

Have a wonderful weekend and I’ll see you on the flip side.
