Kickboxing 101

Don’t do it.

There you go – that’s all you need to know.

I’m kidding! (sorta)

Recently I went my first kickboxing class thanks to a Groupon I couldn’t pass up. “What a great way to try something new!” I said. “What a cheap way to try something I’ve always wanted to do,” I said. Clearly, I was out of my mind.

My friend, Amanda, also purchased the Groupon because surely we wouldn’t both die together on the same day at the same time, right? Surely not! We shared nervous texts the entire week leading up to our first class. The day of we both arrived pretty early to check it out and quickly slip out if we wanted. My nervousness level was much higher than hers (shocker!) and she talked me into staying even though there were people all over the floor passed out and the windows were, conveniently, all fogged up from either the heat coming off the people or chloroform. I’m not sure which.

The lady showed us around to the lackluster locker room, but it wasn’t a deal breaker; I was here to kick some booty, not worry about how pretty the decor was. We got changed and took our place on the mat. We looked like broken seals trying to get our free boxing gloves on ourselves and eventually helped each other so we could take some pictures proving we really went.

“Alright, let’s warm up!” the instructor yelled. Ok, let’s do this. Whatcha got? TWENTY MINUTES OF BURPEES, PLANKS, SQUATS, RUNNING, AND OTHER HORRENDOUS THINGS LATER, it was time to “start.” Are you kidding me? This out-of-shape girl was already on the floor, panting, pouring sweat, and trying not to hurl. The sweet 60-year-old lady behind me assured me that was the “hardest part.” Ok, that’s fine. I’ll take it. Too bad I could no longer lift my arms or my legs to do the fun part. I kid you not. The instructor came by to teach Amanda and I how to jab, hook, and round house, but I was so gassed from the warm up that I just bopped, tapped, and shuffled before falling to the floor in a heaping mess. Wait! I can do this! Back up I go….a bop here, a tap there. Again, on the floor. Eventually, I had to leave the mat and let Amanda spar with the instructor. I was too busy heaving up my lunch in the bathroom.

I’m sure it was because I got overheated or something, but it was horrid. HORRID. Amanda did a fantastic job though, and I am proud of her! I WILL be going back (I paid good money for that!), but will be sure to tell them that I know my limits and if I need to sit one out, I’m going to. I will say that the instructors that night were very kind whenever I did have to stop or sit down and catch my breath. While they do want you to try your hardest and they do like to push, they did not keep after me and checked on me regularly to see if I needed anything. When the girl who showed us around in the beginning said to make sure we made it to the bathroom if we got sick, and not to do it on the mat, I took it with a grain of salt. I mean, we were kickboxing for Pete’s sake. Never again will I be so blase about vomit advice.

Have you ever been kickboxing? What did you think of it?

Can You Help Me?

IMG_0472
I’ve been working hard this year to exercise more. While I started out with a bang – swimming, walking, and dancing in the dark – I’m ending the year with a whimper. Granted, I did finish a 5k last weekend, but I walked the whole thing. I don’t necessarily *want* to run, but I think I’d like the option.
I’m working on goals for 2016 and, again, fitness is in the top three..namely getting more healthy. I’m big and beautiful, I know this. But I am not as healthy as I could be and I know that, too. So, in an effort to do even better with my fitness in 2016, I’m entering a contest for 7 months of free personal training. The company offering the training is Crane L.I.F.E. Fitness and I’m excited to hopefully try them out and report back.
Please take a moment and vote for me here. The top 5 contestants in votes will then be interviewed by Matt Crane, the personal trainer, and he will decide after that. Fingers crossed!
Thank you in advance for helping me with one of my 2016 goals. 😃

#bloglikecrazy, you say?

Today kicks off one of my favorite times of year. November is #bloglikecrazy month over at See Jane Write and it’s always fun to get to know my writing sisters even better during this time. We strive to blog every day during the month of November.

I’ve got a few tricks up my sleeve this year so I am really hoping to do it! With a month-long challenge for Birmingham Girls Club over on Instagram going on, as well as my own personal meditation challenge – a la Deepak Chopra – this will prove to be very interesting. But I think I can do it!

I’ll also be moving more this month, too, care of Jennifer over at Stellar Fashion & Fitness, SOL Dance Experience, and – hopefully – some swimming. We have the Mustache Dache coming up in a few weeks and I’d really like to participate this year if I can.

So, welcome to November and off we go! At least we got an hour back last night. 😉

P.S. Also, in a completely unrelated, yet hilariously funny side note, I accidentally had a few typos before proofing just now: “sleep” instead of sleeve above, as well as “medication” instead of meditation. I wonder if my body is trying to tell me something about sleep and medication. 😉

My New Obsession In the Dark

SOL Dance Experience

Last night I had the best time in the dark. I went to a new fitness “class” called SOL Dance Experience. The web site describes SOL as “a LIGHTS OUT, free-form, hour-long Dance Experience for women of all fitness levels. Come find your light in the dark.”

I first heard about the experience from a fellow member of the Birmingham Girls Club. She left one of our meetings a little early one day to go try out this new dance class she’d heard about. I was immediately intrigued and asked for a recap. She told me later how much she loved it and it prompted me to check it out to possibly set up a private class for the Girls Club.

I wasn’t sure what to expect and was really quite nervous at that the thought of being in a completely dark room with total strangers for an hour. I don’t normally have high anxiety about those things or claustrophobia; it was more the unknown that freaked me out. Laura Gaines, the teacher and creator of SOL, greeted me with a huge smile and hug. She explained the “fireflies” on the floor – little bits of glow-in-the-dark tape placed throughout the room that help you know where your “space” is during the class. She also gave us instructions on how to get to the bathroom and exits, should we need it. You do have to sign a short waiver for the class, like most fitness regimens, so be sure to read it carefully. While there are no strobe lights or anything, it can get a bit unnerving adjusting to total darkness for the first few songs.

The ladies in the class welcomed me with open arms and prepared me for the fun time that was about to ensue. After Laura’s husband, Latham, finished putting up blackout curtains, we were asked to put cell phones on silent and away (completely, so they wouldn’t light up) and to cover Fitbits and other fitness watches with pieces of black tape she provided. Laura likes the time and space to be completely free from distractions so you can be your authentic self and move and feel however you like.

The lights went out and the music started. After slowly adjusting to the darkness and my “circle of power,” I finally let loose. I cannot begin to tell you how much fun I had! Every dance move you ever wanted to try was open to you. Every artist you ever wanted to imitate was available. Every song you ever wanted to try to sing you could. It was like the greatest karaoke bar and concert I never went to. You could sing to the upbeat, fun, dance songs and no one could hear you – the music was too loud. You could clap and yell and feed off each other’s energy even though you couldn’t see each other. Last night I busted out my Beyonce, Britney, Bruno, Tina, Elvis, Napoleon Dynamite, Carlton Banks, and even the Macarena (don’t tell anyone!). So many artists and movements popped out of me while I danced; I tried everything I had ever wanted to, but was too afraid for fear someone would see me and laugh.

Besides the amazing music selection, the other thing I loved about the class was that I could take a break any time I wanted and no one saw or judged. I get overheated pretty quickly and easily, so I took small breaks to catch my breath. I normally hate doing that in a class full of people because it’s so conspicuous. In this class, I could stop and let my feet or lungs rest any time I wanted and then get right back to it. Confession: I also got super sweaty and even took off my top for a few minutes to cool off. NO ONE KNEW!

The experience was completely out of my comfort zone and I almost left early on because of the darkness and anxiety that I felt not being able to see anything. But I took a few deep breaths, calmed my nerves, focused on my firefly, and the music took over. By the end of the evening, I had forgotten all about my fears earlier and couldn’t imagine not doing this as much as possible. I’m hooked!

Laura and her husband got the idea for SOL after living in New Zealand and going to a rave dancing with about 100 other people with glow sticks in the dark. She has always been a body movement advocate and loved the energy from the free form dancing. She brought the experience to Birmingham a few months ago and last night’s class was the 8th one she’s hosted. They are currently held every Tuesday evening from 7:30pm – 8:45 pm at Embody Practice Center on Montclair Road. The cost is $5 for first timers and $10 per class after that with discounts offered on multi-class packages. She’s planning on adding a Thursday evening class beginning in August. You can find out more information about SOL Experience and RSVP on their website at http://soldancex.com.

On the SOL Experience Facebook page, Laura recently wrote, “Tonight, after an amazing SOL Session, I realize part of the magic. At 7:30pm, women gather in the room. Some know each other, some are actual friends, most have never met. There’s chit chat, often nervous, unsure of what’s to come. Then, the lights go out, the music starts and each woman sets out on her own journey. In the darkness, liberated from any judgments, she is free to become whatever she wants. As the hour passes, the individual gets stronger. Confidence soars, endorphins rush. When the lights come back up, this group of individuals, now bonded by this unique experience, emerges as a tribe. Thank you, my tribe of SOL mates. I feel stronger for having danced with you.”

That describes it perfectly. I hope to NOT see you at SOL Dance Experience soon!

What’s New for November? Me!

Heyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy out there in blogland! I’m baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-aaaaaaaaaaaaaack. First off, before I get started on anything else, I have to tell you that La-Di-Da-Di just came on the radio station I am listening to. SCORE! This takes me back to junior high and high school. I may or may not still know all the words. Shhhhhhhhhh!

Alright, back to business. November is #bloglikecrazy month for us See Jane Write gals. And seeing as how I have been sorely lacking in the writing department for months, here goes nothing.

I am grateful for Javacia’s writing prompts for each day if we’re blanking. Today’s topic is our intentions for the month. We all know how well I do with written out goals (cough), but I am hopeful! This month I would like to:

  1. Continue this writing trend
  2. Work harder on making healthier food choices
  3. Start riding Elektra again (my bicycle..I stopped during the hot weather because I would surely pass out)
  4. Spend more quality time with hubster, family, and friends (I’ve been remiss in my trips home to Montgomery)
  5. Begin cleaning out the house so I can have a massive yard sale in the spring and MINIMIZE
  6. Focus on finances and make some major changes for the new year
  7. Slow down socially. I am in desperate need of “me” time. I love my city, all my friends and their celebrations, but I’m just wearing myself down, I can tell. So HEALTH IS NUMBER ONE! My hypothyroidism levels continue to increase (not good), so I need to slow down and focus on all things good and well.

That’s it. That’s me and November. Are you doing #bloglikecrazy? If so, what are you most excited to write about?

See you tomorrow! 🙂

Love yourself.
Find peace inside.
Share happiness.
